English snails

Snails from our garden. Look at them, getting all fat eating expensive Waitrose kale and salad. They don’t know what’s going to happen to them soon …

    to Miki:

It’s traditional food, but not many English people eat snails nowadays unless they’re going on holiday to France.

In England we’ve historically eaten snails since Roman times. The Romans actually brought their own species of snail to England to eat (called Helix pomatia or Roman snail, they are apparently very fat, but you don’t see them very often in England).

The ones that I’ve caught are common garden snails, Helix aspersa, also known as petit gris in France. They are completely safe to eat, provided you feed them on lettuce for a few days to clean out their systems.

I’m sure they knew what’s gonna happen, because you are keeping them in your cooking bowl on the frying pan on the kitchen table…..and you’ve been checking if they are well every single minutes, with the dribbling mouth.
